Measuring Energy Efficiency
The RESNET HERS Index is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured. Developed by the Residential Energy Services Network, the HERS Score is a great way to communicate information to your buyers. By looking at the HERS score, buyers can anticipate their energy bills, calculate the true cost of their homeownership, and also anticipate the comfort of the home.
How to Get a HERS Score
To receive a HERS score, a certified, third-party assesses the energy efficiency of the home and assigns it a relative performance score. To assign this score, the HERS Certified Rater calculates an energy rating for the home. This rating is compared to a model ‘reference home’ that is the same size and shape as the home being rated. Therefore, the score is relative to the size, shape, and type of home. The lower the number, the more energy efficient the home is.
